The Confederation of Lawyers of Asia and Pacific (COLAP) has expressed deep concern over the ‘dramatic’ and dangerous incident of the Taliban’s seizure of power in Afghanistan. The COLAP adopted a resolution on the latest developments in Afghanistan on 16th October 2021 during its EC meeting.
The COLAP Executive Committee said during its regular meeting that power had been handed over to the Taliban on the eve of the withdrawal of US troops after 20 years of their aggressive war in Afghanistan violating international laws and UN resolutions which caused genocide and severe destruction of civilian lives. After a long dark period of the US occupation in this ‘blue-print game’ of imperialism, the Afghan people are now facing the darkness of medieval barbarism of the violent fanatical militant Taliban regime. While the withdrawal of US troops from Afghanistan is long desired to the people of that country and to the whole world, and it’s a victory of Afghan people, the Taliban regime is by no means an alternative. Taliban regime in Afghanistan everyday destroying democratic rights, freedom of speech, free thinking, Woman’s emancipation, and Rule of Law. The Taliban regime arbitrarily excluded the proportionate representation of ethnic and religious minorities of the Afghan population. There is a deep conspiracy behind the resurgence of the Taliban. It is also linked to billions of dollars in drug trafficking and illegal arms trade.
In a resolution, COLAP EC called the resurgence of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan a serious threat to the security and Rule of Law of the whole of South Asia. COLAP have called for vigilance against the use of Taliban power in Afghanistan to create tension in South Asia and to “export” Taliban terrorism and ideological influence to various countries of Asia and the Pacific region. COLAP also criticizes countries that directly or indirectly support the Taliban regime in Afghanistan.
